Common monitor specifications and their meanings translated into plain English by the team at Hybrid Gaming
Resolution Measures image sharpness via pixel count. Common gaming resolutions are 1080p (Full HD), 1440p (QHD), and 4K (UHD). While 1080p is often suitable up to 27″, higher resolutions provide more detail but demand significantly more PC power (especially GPU) for smooth gaming.
Refresh Rate (Hz) How many times the screen updates the picture per second. Higher numbers (like 144Hz or 240Hz) mean smoother motion, crucial for fast-paced games. To fully benefit, your PC (especially the graphics card) needs to be powerful enough to produce frame rates (FPS) close to the monitor’s refresh rate in your games (e.g., ~144 FPS for a 144Hz monitor).
Response Time (ms) How quickly a pixel can change color (usually measured grey-to-grey or GtG). Lower numbers (like 1ms) reduce motion blur and ghosting in fast scenes. For gaming, anything under 5ms typically provides a great experience.
Panel Type (IPS, VA, TN, OLED) The screen technology. IPS offers great colors/viewing angles. TN is fastest for response time. VA provides excellent contrast (deep blacks). OLED provides ultimate contrast (true blacks), near-instant response times & vibrant colors, but is significantly more expensive (as of Apr 2025) and has a small risk of image burn-in with static content.
Adaptive Sync (G-Sync/FreeSync) Technology that matches the monitor’s refresh rate to the graphics card’s output rate, preventing screen tearing and stuttering for smoother gameplay.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) Allows for greater contrast (brighter whites, darker blacks) and a wider color range, making images more lifelike and vibrant. Look for standards like HDR10 or DisplayHDR ratings (e.g., DisplayHDR 400).
Brightness (cd/m² or nits) How bright the screen can get. Higher numbers are better for bright rooms or HDR content. Typical monitors are around 250-350 cd/m².
